Just as the clean-up operation began following deadly thunderstorms over the weekend that left parts of the country under several feet of water the heavens opened again, spelling more misery for motorists.Long tailbacks were reported on routes between Dubai and Sharjah and Dubai and Abu Dhabi as huge puddles of water formed on roads. Police had to close several lanes on different stretches of Emirates Roads due to flooding.
Commuters had to wade through several inches of water just to get to their vehicles and then again they finally reached the office as car parks were turned into lakes.Sharjah bore the brunt of the flooding over the weekend eyewitnesses said on Tuesday much of the emirate was once again submerged under water, making driving impossible in areas.The situation on the roads was expected to get even worse Tuesday evening after Dubai's transport authority closed the Sharjah-bound side of Emirates Road for the second time in three days due to flooding in Sharjah.
Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said late on Tueday it has closed Emirates Road at the interchange of Dubai-Al Ain Road. It said traffic was being diverted at the interchange and at all other interchanges along the closed section of the road.The RTA said it had "announced the diversion of traffic on Sharjah-bound Emirates Road to a number of alternative roads ... due to the large amount of rainwater accumulated on Emirates Road, past 'National Paint' bridge in the emirate of Sharjah".Commuters on their way home along Emirates Road on Sunday reported being stuck in traffic for up to seven hours due to the road closure and diversions.
